About the format

What is an ODS file?

ODS (OpenDocument Spreadsheet) is the standard format of LibreOffice Calc and Apache OpenOffice, and Google Sheets can export it too. It's an open, international standard, so it's common in government and education.

Things to know

  • Values as the document shows them. An .ods file stores the text each cell displays, in the author's regional style. A file made in Germany may show 1.234,50 €. If you need plain numbers for a database, choose Raw values under Numbers, and ISO under Dates.
  • Password-protected files. Files protected with LibreOffice's standard AES-256 encryption are unlocked on your computer when you type the password. Two kinds can't be opened yet: the old Blowfish encryption from early OpenOffice versions, and the newer encryption introduced in LibreOffice 26.2. For those, save the file again in LibreOffice without a password first.
  • Merged cells and line breaks are handled the same way as for Excel files. Check Fill merged cells to repeat a merged value across its range.

Using LibreOffice instead

In LibreOffice Calc, choose File › Save a Copy, set the type to Text CSV (.csv), and check Edit filter settings to choose the separator and encoding. Calc saves the current sheet. To export every sheet from the command line, see our guide to converting from the command line.

FAQ

Questions

Can Excel open ODS files?

Yes, Excel opens .ods files, though some formatting may change. To get a CSV, you don't need Excel at all: drop the file in the converter above.

Why do numbers in my CSV have commas as decimal points?

The .ods file was made with regional settings that use a decimal comma, and the converter keeps the values as the document shows them. Choose Raw values under Numbers to get plain numbers like 1234.5.

Does it support .fods (flat ODS) files?

Yes. Flat OpenDocument files, which are a single XML file instead of a zip, are read the same way.

Is my ODS file uploaded?

No. Everything happens in your browser, so the file and any password stay on your computer.
