About the format
What is an XLSB file?
XLSB is Excel's binary workbook format. It holds everything an .xlsx file does, but stores it as compact binary records instead of XML, so very large workbooks open and save faster and take less space. Finance and reporting teams often use it for files with hundreds of thousands of rows.
The catch is that fewer programs can read it. Google Sheets doesn't import .xlsb at all, and many online converters reject it. This converter reads the binary records directly in your browser.
What you get
- Every worksheet as its own CSV, named after the sheet. Chart sheets are skipped because they hold no cells.
- Numbers, dates and currency formatted the way Excel displays them, or raw values if you prefer.
- Formulas written as the result Excel last saved, which is what Excel itself puts in a CSV.
Using Excel instead
If you have Excel, open the file and use File › Save As › CSV UTF-8 (Comma delimited). It saves one sheet at a time. Or save the workbook as .xlsx so that other tools can read it.
FAQ
Questions
Why can't Google Sheets open my XLSB file?
Google Sheets doesn't support the .xlsb format. Convert it to CSV here, or open it in Excel and save it as .xlsx, which Sheets can import.
Is XLSB to CSV conversion lossless?
The values are kept exactly as Excel shows them. Formatting, formulas, charts and macros can't be stored in a CSV, so they're dropped, the same as when Excel saves a CSV.
Does XLSB keep macros?
An .xlsb file can contain macros, but a CSV can't. The converter only reads cell values and never runs any macro, so it's safe to use with files from others.
How large an XLSB file can it handle?
It depends on your computer's memory rather than a set limit. Binary workbooks are compact, so files with hundreds of thousands of rows usually convert in a few seconds.
