Click Download next to each file, or Download all as zip.
Why this converter
XLS to XLSX without Excel
Every sheet
All visible sheets come across with their names. Tick Include hidden sheets to keep those too.
Real numbers and dates
Numbers stay numbers and dates stay dates, so sums and filters work in the new file.
Leading zeros kept
IDs, ZIP codes and SKUs like 000451 stay exactly as they were.
Batch conversion
Convert a whole folder of old .xls files in one go and save them as a zip.
Private
Nothing is uploaded. Safe for payroll, customer lists and financial files.
Honest limits
This rebuilds the data, not the look: colors, number formats, charts and macros aren't copied. For those, use Save As in Excel.

FAQ
Questions
How do I convert XLS to XLSX?
Drop your .xls files onto the converter above. Each one is turned into an .xlsx workbook with the same sheets, and you click Download. With several files, download them all as one zip.
How do I convert XLS to XLSX in Excel?
Open the .xls file in Excel, choose File › Save As (or Save a Copy), pick Excel Workbook (*.xlsx) and click Save. You can also use File › Info › Convert, which replaces the old file.
Can I batch convert XLS to XLSX?
Yes. Select or drop as many .xls files as you like. Each is converted on its own, and Download all as zip saves them together.
What is kept when converting?
Every visible sheet and its name, all values, dates as real dates, numbers as numbers, and text with leading zeros like 00123. Formulas are saved as their results. Cell colors, fonts, number formats like $ and %, charts and macros are not carried over, so for heavily formatted files use Excel's Save As.
What is the difference between XLS and XLSX?
XLS is the binary format of Excel 97–2003, limited to 65,536 rows and 256 columns. XLSX, used since Excel 2007, is a zipped XML format that is smaller, safer and holds 1,048,576 rows and 16,384 columns.
Are my files uploaded?
No. The conversion runs in your browser, so the files never leave your computer.
